Aim for a score of 60 to 70. This is standard for web content.

A score of 60 to 70 means that your content is understood by 13 to 15 year olds.

If your score is lower than 60, that means your copy is harder to read.

Limit long sentences and words with four or more syllables.

I check Flesch Reading Ease score in my word processor when I review copy prior to publishing on my website.

Use a web app that calculates the score for you if your word processor does not.

Your word processor may give you a percentage. Or you can use an add-on tool to monitor passive sentences.

Some SEO plugins check for passive sentences and alert you if your content has too many.

Shorten Words

Also, SEO plugins may alert you if your paragraph is over 120 to150 words.

Add White Space

More white space helps your Flesch Reading Ease score because you are keeping your paragraphs shorter.

Include Bullet Points

  • Capitalize the first letter of bullet.
  • Add a period at end of sentences.
  • Use bullet points sparingly on a page.
  • Start some groups of bullets with a verb.
  • Make each bullet point similar in length.
  • Include 2 to 8 bullet points in each list.
  • List steps with numbers instead of bullets.

A group of bullet points should be followed by at least one sentence before your next subheading. This balances out the words on the page.
